Comparing Motorcycle Insurance
The best way to make sure you're getting the cheapest possible motorcycle insurance is to
do your homework. That means doing a lot of comparison shopping. Motorcycle insurance rates
can vary widely from insurance company to insurance company, so spending time getting
motorcycle insurance quotes is definitely a worthwhile investment. When you're looking to
find cheap motorcycle insurance, even if it's classic motorcycle insurance or custom
motorcycle insurance, in order to do your comparison shopping properly you need to make sure
you are comparing equal insurance products. As the saying goes, you don't want to be comparing
apples and oranges. Your motorcycle insurance quote will reflect various types of coverage -
some mandatory and some optional. Not every company will offer the same package unless you
specifically request the terms, so make sure you understand what each quote insures.
Liability insurance is required by law. This pays for damage you cause to the property of
others when driving your motorcycle. The rule of thumb is to carry as much liability insurance
as you can afford, in case you hit something expensive. You will be personally liable for any
damages that exceed the limits of your liability insurance. Bodily injury coverage is also
mandatory. This covers injuries you cause to another person. Again, you want to carry as much
bodily injury coverage as you can, because if you seriously injure someone you can be sued for
their medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and punitive damages - and if they are
awarded more than your insurance will pay for, they may be entitled to put a lien on your
house and other property and perhaps even attach your wages. Collision coverage covers
damages to your own motorcycle in any accident that can't be charged to another driver,
including upsets to your bike. This is optional; to save money, you may be able to choose a
high deductible. Comprehensive coverage is for damage to your bike not caused by upset or
another vehicle - for example, if a tree falls on your bike. This is also optional, but is
usually inexpensive. Passenger liability is also optional; this covers any injury to
passengers you are carrying in an accident or upset. If you don't carry passengers, or you're
sure that any passenger you do carry would never sue you, you can skip it. Medical coverage
is more important for motorcycle riders than for automobile drivers. It covers your own
medical expenses in any accident or upset that cannot be charged to another driver. You may
need this type of coverage if your health insurance policy excludes payments for motorcycle
injuries, and many do, so check your health insurance policy before you begin shopping for a
motorcycle insurance quote. |
